PFAS in Cosmetics: Why ‘Forever Chemicals’ Show Up in Mascara and Foundation

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) appear in roughly half of tested cosmetics, especially waterproof/long-lasting formulas like mascara (82%), foundations (63%), and liquid lipsticks (62%). Brands add them intentionally for water resistance, spreadability, and durability – but these persistent “forever chemicals” bioaccumulate and may pose health risks.
