Kojic acid – derived from fungi during rice/sake fermentation – inhibits tyrosinase to lighten hyperpigmentation effectively. Works faster than arbutin/niacinamide for PIH/melasma but carries higher irritation risk, especially >1%. Solid brightener when buffered properly.
Jojoba oil is excellent – technically a liquid wax ester chemically identical to human sebum (80% similarity) – making it non-comedogenic (rating 0-2) and uniquely balancing. It regulates oil production while moisturizing without greasiness, but it’s not miraculous; squalane edges it for lightness/stability, and clinical data is modest.
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) appear in roughly half of tested cosmetics, especially waterproof/long-lasting formulas like mascara (82%), foundations (63%), and liquid lipsticks (62%). Brands add them intentionally for water resistance, spreadability, and durability – but these persistent “forever chemicals” bioaccumulate and may pose health risks.
Squalane mimics human sebum perfectly – lightweight, non-comedogenic, and rapidly absorbed without greasy residue. Originally extracted from shark livers (high squalene content), modern production uses sugarcane fermentation or olives. The stable, hydrogenated form (squalane) revolutionized facial oils by delivering deep hydration without oxidation or pore-clogging.
The claim has some basis in lab tests – polyglutamic acid (PGA) can bind 4,000-5,000x its weight in water versus hyaluronic acid’s (HA) 1,000x. But real skin performance tells a more nuanced story: PGA excels at surface retention while HA penetrates deeper. They’re complementary, not competitive.
CoQ10 is one of those ingredients that sounds technical but does a very practical job: it helps skin defend itself from oxidative stress while supporting the energy production cells need to repair and renew. In anti-aging formulas, it is usually included to help soften the look of fine lines, support collagen-related processes, and make skin…
The delicate eye area needs targeted ingredients that address fluid retention, pigmentation, collagen loss, and thin skin without irritation.
Keratosis pilaris (KP) – those rough, bumpy patches on arms, thighs and buttocks – requires exfoliation, hydration and barrier support to smooth texture over time.
Rosacea-prone skin needs gentle, anti-inflammatory ingredients that strengthen the barrier and reduce vascular reactivity without triggering flare-ups.
